Words of Wisdom from the President:
|
What a great summer the club had! Rider and membership participation increased. Club members achieved personnel goals and support good causes. Everyone was able to get out and enjoy the weather and wonderful roads. But this period of riding bliss is slowing passing away. As the school buses come out of hibernation and the leaves change, or should I say the pine needles fall in greater amounts, the fallen temperatures and shorter days follow. This is great time to sit back and reflect on where you have come as a rider. Going through the mental scrapbook and see what you were able to accomplish over the spring and summer. For me, I was lucky enough to achieve some of my goals while falling a little short of others.
While fall ends with some charity rides, there can be seemingly little to do, little to set goals for and many, many reasons not to get a ride in. While I will be able to go into the darkness of winter content on what I did, more importantly, I have been able to identify where I failed and make plans to fix those issues for next year. It is easy to look towards these winter months and see nothing but cold, wet, windy roads. These fears cause many cyclist to lean their bike up against that wall in the garage with some extra lube to keep the rust off. Instead of hopelessness, think of this time as a chance to reset your goals for the new year. A chance to get ready for those goals you might have missed. A chance to start your cycling life anew in the spring thaw.
But in order to achieve this, you must keep riding. The winter months can sometimes serve as trials, but with the right preparation and proper equipment, the trials can become trials of enjoyment as you learn that as uncomfortable as the winter ride might be, it will make the summer ride that much more enjoyable.
Pedal on friends!

World Championships
Dane Pilon returned from his trip with the US Team to Denmark and the world championship. Even when facing the world’s elite riders, Dane showed what hard work and dedication can do by finishing 4th in the time trial. When riders reach the level of competition that Dane has, it is truly something to look up too and to draw inspiration from. Please extend your congratulations to Dane the next time you see him zooming by. London 2012 is his next goal.

Kurt Hahn, from the Fort Bragg MWR, leads the group which meets up at building 454 on Pope Airfield located across the parking lot from the gym.

SSDD Ride
As we roll out of summer, through fall and into the winter, finding the time and motivation to ride can be tough. Nevertheless, it is in these winter months that riders can reinvent themselves and hone on riding skills that will allow them to enter the new year stronger and better than ever before. But often, finding someone to ride with can be tough.
Starting next week Richard Kirby will be leading a morning ride from the Covenant Love Church parking lot, 420 Dunn Road. Every morning, Monday through Friday, the ride will start at 5:15 AM and go to Wade and back. The ride will be complete by 7:00 most mornings. This is a drop ride, so please prepared accordingly, i.e. lights, flat kit and directions if needed. The ride will occur, regardless of temperature or precipitation. There will be a few other standards associated with this ride. If you are interested, please feel free to contact Richard at richard.s.kirby@gmail.com.
Beginner’s Ride
Thanks to the effort of Lou Plummer, the Beginner’s Ride has been a resounding success! We have continually been seeing 10-20 riders show up, new and old. Thanks to all of the more experienced riders for taking the time to mentor the newer riders. As the weather starts to change, please keep a look out for time changes. Following daylight savings, Lou will be spreading the word about the new times. The rides will continue to start at the Covenant Love Church parking lot, 420 Dunn Road. If you are interested in participating or would like more information please feel free to contact Lou, lou.plummer@gmail.com.
Ride Without Limits
The Ride Without Limits group completed a massively successfully event despite Hurricane Irene. Due to the weather, the first day of the two day event was cancelled. Despite this, our team made the trip to ride the second day. An amazing time was had, including the witness of a wedding prior to the start of Sunday’s ride! Special acknowledgement to Pat Blackmon for pushing her personnel limit and riding a personnel best distance of over 70 miles.
As a whole, the team raised over $5,000. A special thanks to Mike Roberts and Pat for their leadership efforts in, C4 had a wonderful showing mainly due to the efforts of these two individuals.
Cycle North Carolina
Cycle North Carolina was setup to promote physical fitness and health, provide economic impact and publicity to rural communities across the state while showcasing the state's beauty, scenic attractions and cultural diversity. In 1997, North Carolina Amateur Sports, the North Carolina Division of Tourism, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Capitol Broadcasting Company discussed the idea of starting a fully supported cross-state bicycle tour in North Carolina. Two years later in 1999, the Cycle North Carolina "Mountains to Coast" fall ride began its inaugural trek across the State of North Carolina. Since then, CNC has attracted participants from all 50 States and 8+ Countries, stopped overnight in 95 North Carolina towns, traveled more than 4,900 miles on the scenic back roads of the state and passed through more than 600 North Carolina communities. Cycle North Carolina has been voted "Best Biking in America" by the League of American Bicyclists and selected as one of the best events in the United States.
Cycle North Carolina "Mountains to the Coast" Fall Ride will be held Saturday, October 1 to Saturday, October 8. The ride will begin in Elkin, N.C. and end at Heritage Park in Corolla, N.C. Day of registration is still available.

Words of Wisdom from the President:

I know the feelings of listening to music while riding is mixed. It seems that a lot of the newer generation of riders has come to believe that it is almost second nature and that an ear bud pumping tunes is as essential as the wheel itself. While a lot of the more “seasoned” riders, the purists if you will, frown upon the contraptions as un-slightly, un-safe and downright sacrilegious. While two of those reasons can be considered as opinion, (I’m sure at one point clip-in pedals were considered sacrilegious), riding with headphones can be unsafe at times. That is why I ride with only one-ear bud in and keep my music at a low level. I suggest that ever rider does the same, but that is not the purpose of this column.
Over the holiday weekend I found myself in a delightful predicament. I was home riding in some of the most beautiful countryside known to man while pedaling away to the same songs that I have had loaded on my iPod for the past year. I would get to listen to the songs the next day, the next month and probably next year. What I wouldn’t be able to do is
|
 |
listen and focus on the wonderful Southwestern Virginia country side as it rolled out and up around me. As Lady Gaga told me about her bad romance for the 1,000,000 this year, I decided to turn her off and listen to what the road had to say. It was quite an experience to listen to how the rhythm of the chain matched my cadence, how the rock of my shoulders matched the sound of the tires on the road. How my breathing was in synch with that dang creaking in my bottom bracket. I was also able to notice things that I otherwise would have missed like how the birds mocked me with their singing while I struggled up the hill but made it seem so pleasant. All of this made the ride that would turn into my favorite of all time that much better. There are going to be rides where you are just sucking and you might need Taylor Swift to remind you that you belong with her and that you need to go faster to get home. |
|
But a lot of times you might find yourself re-discovering your joy for cycling if you turn off Metallica or Jay-Z and let your bike and body sing you home.
Pedal on friends!

Assault on Mount Mitchell
 |
The Assault on Mount Mitchell began in 1975 when a group of friends decided to ride from Spartanburg, SC to the top of Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River. From that causal beginning this annual event has become one of the best known centuries in the country. This event is limited to 750 riders and has become so popular because of the level of difficulty that it fills up quickly and routinely brings in some of the best riders in the region each May. This year several riders from the club participated and did quite well. Below is their results based upon their age groups. I am sure that I missed some people so please feel free to send me an email, president@crosscreekcyclingclub.org, so that those individuals may be recognized for their performance. |
24 Hours of Booty

In 2002, Spencer Lueders set his spokes on a three-mile stretch of North Carolina roadway nicknamed the "Booty Loop". While he set out alone, it didn't take long for friends, family and community members to join in with the cyclist and his 24-hour charitable mission. He rode 312 miles in 24 hours. He raised $6,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation that year. He started a movement. He started 24 Hours of Booty, the nation's only 24-hour charity road cycling ride.
Since that year, 24 Hours of Booty has raised millions for cancer causes, becoming the official 24-hour ride of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. 24 Hours of Booty is changing lives, one mile and one dollar at a time. It can change yours.
Some of the members of C4 have organized themselves to raise money and too attend. Pat Davenport and Jenn Doyle are heading there again as old vets of the event while Dylan Lawson will be attempting it for the first time.
Charlotte's Myers Park neighborhood is home to the original Booty Loop, and July 29-30 it will come alive as the home of 24 Hours of Booty. In partnership with presenting sponsor, Levine Cancer Institute, 24 Hours of Booty Charlotte will celebrate its ninth year and host 1,200 riders who will raise more than $1 milllion for cancer research and survivorship.
The Booty Loop in Charlotte is a 2.97 mile loop that is covered by a beautiful canopy of trees and some of the most breath-taking homes in America. The Loop has a great mixture of hills and flats that will challenge riders at every level over the 24 hours. At the center of it all is Bootyville, hosted by Queens University at Charlotte. Bootyville becomes its own little city and also serves as the event headquarters over the 24 hours. Riders set up campsites and canopies where they can sleep, or more importantly, rest and relax with friends off of the bike. Along with the three meals riders will receive, they will have access to snacks, energy bars, water and Powerade. Bootyville is also the site of the expo area where our corporate sponsors set up shop and offer a range of services including 24 hour bike support, raffles for special items and information about their services. Because of the Booty Loop's residential setting, you will find family, friends and Myers Park residents out supporting the riders at all hours.
If you are interested in participating, support or would like some more information, please feel free to contact Pat Davenport, fanofcar6@aol.com or visit the website, http://www.24hoursofbooty.org/site/PageServer.
Beginner’s Ride
Just a reminder about the growingly popular beginner’s ride. Lou Plummer has been doing a great job of leading this ride twice a week which has grown from 3 riders to upwards of 20 riders. These beginners have been doing a great job of improving their skills and overall fitness. Some riders have grown so fast that they are now up and kicking in the “B” group on Saturdays.
The rides start at the Covenant Love Church parking lot, 420 Dunn Road, at Sundays at 6:00 PM and Wednesdays at 5:30 PM. If you are interested in participating or would like more information please feel free to contact Richard Kirby, president@crosscreekcyclingclub.org.
Ride Without Limits
The Ride Without Limits group continues to raise money, now in excess of $4000!!! As the date for the late August ride approaches please keep working with and encouraging the members of the club who plan on participating. They will be conducting two back to back days of 100 miles each.
If you are interested in participating in Ride Without Limits or with helping in any of the fund raisers above, please feel free to contact Mike Roberts, mroberts@theshaolin.com , or Pat Blackmon, chewstick2@aol.com.

Words of Wisdom from the President:
It is HOT outside and that might be an understatement. The weather is making it a little bit harder to go out and enjoy riding your bike, especially when you are already breaking a sweat just getting your bike off the rack. It is important to keep some things in mind:
- It is also that much more important to drink more than you think you need when you ride and during the day. If you just start drinking water while you ride and haven’t drunk anything during the day then it is already too late and you will be feeling the effects sooner than later.
- Stop more to refill your bottles and/or carry more bottles. This might make your ride last a little bit longer but that is better than the side effects of dehydration.
- Tell someone where you are going, what route you are taking and when you should be back.
Don’t be disappointed if your goal times for events are slower than expected. Don’t get discouraged if you are going a little bit slower. The heat effects everyone, even professional riders.
Pedal on friends!

Please note that at times this parking lot can be quite full due to military operations.
Saturday Ride Group Leader Volunteers needed!

Words of Wisdom from the President:
The weather is change and the itch to get out and enjoy is becoming unbearable. I have been doing my best to enjoy the weather and while dodging the rain I often find myself thinking about why I ride.
I ride to race. I love the adrenaline rush at the start line, the whirring of all the wheels and pedals moving in motion. The sense of collective speed of a 40 rider peloton as we fly through the country side.
But not everyone rides to race. For ever racer there at least 10 other individuals who ride for other reasons, often much more noble than the vain attempts of childhood glory that us weekend racers strive to achieve. As we get out and enjoy the changing weather on our bikes I encourage everyone to think about why they ride and share that wonderful feeling to someone else, and then help them experience it.
Pedal on friends!

Rider news
We have great news about one of our new club members. Jason Kimball was injured in a training accident on Fort Bragg a few years ago. Since then he has been working hard towards rehabilitation. He has his sights set on becoming a Paralympic Cyclist. Just last week he was accepted to the Paralympic Cycling Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista CA this month. Make sure to congratulate Jason the next time you see him on the road.
Methodist Challenge
On April 16th at 9:00 AM the students of Greg Combs Sports Management class will be hosting the 2nd Annual Methodist Challenge at the Wade Fire Department. The challenge includes either a 1k, 5k, or 10k run/walk; a 18, 36, or 54 mile bike course; or a combination of the two. All proceeds will go to Moses “The Bicycle Man” Mathis of Tiffany Pines Community Outreach. Please come out and support this event to help Moses!
Tour De Moore Road Race
The 36th annual Tour De Moore Road Race will take place on April 30th in Southern Pines. The club will support this race which will serve as our race event for the year. This allows us to continue to register our club with USA Cycling. The race itself had been taken over by two new directors who promise to take it the event to new heights. It is an exciting honor for the club to be asked to support this event. We are asking for volunteers to help us support the race. No racing experience is necessary and most volunteers will be asked to serve as course marshals to ensure that roads are safe for the racers and that the racers go the correct way. This year’s race promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. If you have never seen a race and are interested in seeing firsthand what it is all about, this is a perfect chance.
Ride Without Limits
The Ride Without Limits group has raised over $1000 so far. Great job guys!! On March 19th, they were able to raise over $400 at the car wash fundraiser. In order to continue to raise funds the group will have two upcoming fundraisers:
- Valet Parking for the Dogwood Festival: April 29th through May 1st at the AIT building downtown.
- Car and Bicycle Wash: May 14th, Hendrick, Chrysler and Jeep across from Fazoli’s.
- We are asking for volunteers to help the group collect funds.
If you are interested in participating in Ride Without Limits or with helping in any of the fund raisers above, please feel free to contact Mike Roberts, mroberts@theshaolin.com , or Pat Blackmon, chewstick2@aol.com .

Words of Wisdom from the President:
“2011 promises to be an exciting year for Cross Creek Cycling! As president I have three main goals for the club this year:
1) Increase member participation – There is a wealth of knowledge and ideas floating around out there, not to mention the huge number of just plain good people within the club. By encourage everyone to get involve the club’s ability to incorporate everyone’s ideas and talents increases which allows the club to have a greater and more positive impact on not just the cycling community in Fayetteville but the entire region! We can do this many ways, such as participation in charity rides and beginner rider development.
2) Beginner Rider Development – In order to continue to have a positive impact on the cycling community we must continue and strengthen our efforts to invite brand spanking new riders and develop them to tanned lined, pedal cranking fools. To do this we are going to be starting a weekly rider development ride on Sundays led by Lou Plummer. But something that every member of the club can do is to take new riders under the wing and show them the little nuances of riding that it took some of us years to learn. We need to strive to make each club event such a positive experience that new riders don’t want to go home, they just want to hang out with us.
3) Focus on two major events – The key to success is most often not trying to do hundreds of things well, it is mastering a few things. That is what we plan on doing this year for our scheduled events. I want to focus on two major events and put the majority of our efforts into them. That is not to say that we will ignore everything else, we will also be providing substantial support to the Sandhills Club for their road race in April and to organizing a large group to participate in the Ride Without Limits in August. This year we will focus on assisting the students of Methodist College in putting on their Methodist Challenge on April 16th. All proceeds from this event will go to support Moses Mathis, the Bicycle Man. Then on Sunday, November 6th we will be working with the Fort Bragg Rugby team on a metric century (with shorter options) to benefit Ride 2 Recovery-Southeast. The ride is part of the “Strength of the Warrior Weekend”. which also includes a golf and rugby tournament. Again, by focusing on these two major events and providing significant contributions to a few others, we can ensure the best chance of success for all parties involved.
I am extremely excited to serve as your president this year. We have a great group of club members who have stepped up and have taken on the challenges of organizations head on. This attitude is proving to be contagious and I hope that everyone in the club catches the bug!!
Pedal on friends!

Saturday Ride Start Location
We are looking at starting the Saturday club rides at a different location once a month starting on April 9th. We encourage everyone to come and voice their opinion on this matter so that we can make the best decision.

Currently the rides are on Sunday afternoons at 3PM. After the beginning of Daylight Savings Time a Wednesday evening 5:30 ride will start. The Tuesday/Thursday Ft. Bragg ride starts up again on March 15 at 5:30. Please check the

Monthly Century Rides
Take advantage of the opportunity to ride a century every month in the C4 Century Series. Check the community calendar on the club web site and indicate your interest or find out more on the club’s Facebook page on the “Event’s Tab”. Eight riders finished the February ride on the 20th. The next ride is tentatively scheduled for March 20th.
Ride Without Limits
There are currently 18 members of the club registered for the Ride Without Limits, August 27 & 28 in Pittsboro. Contact Lou Plummer or Pat Blackmon for more info.
The two-day Ride Without Limits bike tour is the ultimate road trip allowing cyclists to choose from three route options each day (38, 64 or 100 miles) , or whatever distance they can ride. People with disabilities face challenges every day. It’s time to face your own challenge and make a difference for Easter Seals and United Cerebral Palsy and the people they serve.
Each rider raises funds and awareness for United Cerebral Palsy. For the North Carolina Ride you are asked to raise just $250. Our team is working together to hold several fundraisers to minimize your need to solicit donations on your own. Portions of the money are used right here in our community. In fact, you will meet those who benefit at the ride. Need a reason to ride? Learn more.
From the time you register until well beyond the moment you complete your journey, our Ride Without Limits team will help to make your experience fun, easy and unforgettable.
Enjoy a beautiful route from the saddle of a bike, in the company of friends, old and new. After an invigorating day’s ride, you’ll relax with cabins, meals, showers, and entertainment. Preview the Ride experience.
On Saturday, March 19 please come to the fund raising car wash at Bob Mairer’s Auto Service, 6380 Yadkin Rd.
